November is lung cancer awareness month. Join us at Harty Jewell, PLLC in bringing awareness about lung cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States. Each year, over 218,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer, and around 142,000 people die from lung cancer.

Symptoms can vary from person to person, and many do not have symptoms until their cancer is advanced. Common symptoms include:  prolonged coughing, chest pains, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing up blood, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss.

It has been known since the mid-1930s that inhalation of asbestos fibers is linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, and generally, as exposures to asbestos increase, the higher the individual’s risk of lung cancer. All 4 major types of lung cancer (squamous, adenocarcinoma, large-cell and small-cell) can be linked to asbestos. Those who worked in shipyards, construction trades, pipefitters, machinists, boilermakers, railroad workers, power plant workers, as well as veterans are at high-risk for asbestos-related lung cancer. Lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure is a latent disease, which means that the timeframe from an individual’s exposure to asbestos between diagnosis of lung cancer can be anywhere from 10 to 50 years. Often times, an individual may have had exposure to asbestos in the 1960s or 1970s and developed lung cancer caused or contributed to by asbestos exposure that is not diagnosed until present day.

If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with lung cancer and worked in one of the high-risk industries, or lived in the same household as a worker in one of those industries, you may be entitled to compensation. At Harty Jewell, PLLC, our attorneys investigate where our clients came into contact with asbestos and who can be held responsible. Call us for a free consultation to discuss your legal rights at 757-568-9633 or reach out to us on the web here:

Harty Jewell appreciates our local businesses, and will profile those that stand out in our in our community. If you want world-class martial arts training in a friendly, encouraging, and non-egotistical environment, this is the place.

Will and his son started training at East Wind Academy of Martial Arts years ago and enjoyed every moment. The variety of arts taught at this school is amazing. From Kali, to Jeet Kun do, to Muy Thai, combat submission wrestling, jiu jitsu, and Tae Kwon Do, training here never gets stale.More than that, you know that you are getting excellent training because the instructors are certified directly under world renowned masters like Guru Dan Inosanto, Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje, Tuhon Mel Tortal, Ajarn Chai, and Eric Paulson.

After learning the basics, Wes, Trish, Randy, William and the rest of the instructors encourage students to learn more than just techniques or rote moves; they learn body mechanics and physical principals that are adaptable to any situation.

But best of all are the life-long friends that you'll meet. Will met some of his best friends here. If you want a fun, challenging, martial arts gym that is top notch but also down to earth, you cannot go wrong with East Wind Academy.
