Erin Jewell Begins Campaign for Virginia LLS Visionary of the Year

Harty Jewell, PLLC is Proud to Announce Attorney and Co-Founder, Erin Jewell, Campaigning for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Visionary of the Year” Title in Virginia.

Each year, passionate candidates engage in a philanthropic competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Visionaries of the Year" title across the country and in Virginia. Harty Jewell, PLLC is pleased to announce that Attorney and Co-Founder, Erin E. Jewell, is one of those candidates. Jewell, and her team of family and friends, "Team Crown Jewells," is embarking on a fundraising campaign that runs from April 4 to June 16, 2023, which includes a series of events throughout the campaign that will benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (“LLS”).

Jewell is passionate about LLS because her grandfather, Dr. Patrick Jewell, passed away from a rare form of lymphoma, which was correlated to his military service. Based on his influence in her life, and her grandfather’s work in pediatric medicine, she felt that LLS was a good way to honor her grandfather’s memory, and to help LLS raise funds for pioneering cancer research, patient services, and advocacy efforts on behalf of blood cancer patients. In addition, since Jewell’s law practice has largely focused on representing cancer victims, she has seen firsthand the struggles that patients and their families encounter when facing an unexpected cancer diagnosis.

The mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

The three pillars of LLS’s mission are:

  1. Research - LLS has invested over $1.5 billion in cutting-edge research, funding nearly all of today’s most promising advances.

  2. Education and Support - LLS provided free information, support services, and financial assistance to over 26,000 people last year.

  3. Advocacy - LLS’s network of more than 30,000 volunteers advocate for state and federal policies that benefit patients and survivors.

You may be surprised to learn:

  • Over the last 5 years, LLS has helped advance 75% of the almost 100 FDA approved blood cancer treatment options.

  • Blood cancer research leads to treatment advances for other cancers and serious diseases.

  • Since 2000 more than 40% of the new cancer therapies approved by the FDA are for blood cancer.

  • 42,000 patients were provided with over $241M in total financial assistance grants last year alone.

  • Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer.

  • Leukemia is the #1 most diagnosed form of childhood cancer.

  • Approximately 80% of childhood cancer survivors develop a chronic health condition.
