After a 10 week fundraising campaign, Jewell and her team of friends and neighbors, the "Crown Jewells," raised over $47,000.00 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). These funds will help LLS provide funding for blood cancer research, patient support, and advocacy.

Throughout the 10 week campaign, Jewell and her team rallied support in the local community with fundraisers at local restaurants, including Firehouse Subs of Newport News, Bayhaven Grille, Gus's New York Pizza - Grafton, Smoke, Creekside Cafe, The St. George Brewing Company, and The Cowboy. These local businesses generously supported LLS by hosting "give-back" nights where a percentage of the sales were donated to LLS, and Team Crown Jewells also hosted charity raffles and prizes. Jewell and her team also organized a dinner and music bingo night at VFW Post 3219 - Ruppert L Sargent in Phoebus, where Jewell is an auxiliary member.

The final event of the campaign included a "Closet Clean Out for Cancer" hosted by Jewell's Campaign Manager and dear friend, Robin Babcock. Team Crown Jewells spent days sorting and organizing hundreds of items donated for the Closet Clean Out and preparing silent auction items for what proved to be the campaign's most successful event.

Jewell was inspired to take on this campaign after losing her grandfather, Dr. Patrick Jewell, to lymphoma. Her grandfather's lymphoma was attributed to Agent Orange exposure during Vietnam, and it progressed to a rare complication called Richter's Syndrome that took his life too soon. Jewell's team also was comprised of a leukemia survivor, a Non-Hodgkins lymphoma survivor, and many members who had lost a family member or have a family member currently fighting a blood cancer.

In her law practice, Jewell has also seen firsthand the way that a cancer diagnosis can impact victims and their families. For nearly two decades, Jewell and her law partner, Will Harty, have represented asbestos and mesothelioma victims, and have seen the struggle that cancer victims face as a result of a diagnosis.

Jewell was also impressed with LLS's work advancing cutting-edge research and cures, which has helped to fund 70% of the nearly 100 blood cancer treatments to receive FDA approval in the past five years. The organization’s reach extends beyond blood cancers to impact all areas of cancer research. More than 40% of ALL new cancer therapies approved by the FDA since 2000 were blood cancer drugs, and new treatments pioneered for blood cancers are in clinical trials to treat bone, breast, brain, lung, pancreatic, and prostate cancers.

While just a small way to give back, Jewell hopes that these funds and the efforts of Team Crown Jewells will help make a difference in the fight against blood cancers.
