Mesothelioma Awareness Day - Bringing Awareness to a Deadly Cancer

Mesothelioma Awareness Day was first established by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) in 2004. The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation is the only nonprofit dedicated to eradicating mesothelioma and supporting patients and their families, by providing funding for research to improve treatment options, by providing treatment support and education, and by advocating for federal funding for mesothelioma research.
Mesothelioma Awareness Day began as a way to raise awareness about this rare and deadly cancer, promote research efforts, and provide support to those affected by mesothelioma. Since its inception, Mesothelioma Awareness Day has been observed annually on September 26th to educate the public about mesothelioma and advocate for better treatments and prevention.
The Virginia General Assembly also issued a proclamation in 2012, recognizing Mesothelioma Awareness Day to raise awareness about this rare and deadly cancer and the Virginians impacted by mesothelioma. In Virginia, this day holds special significance as a significant number of Virginians have been impacted by asbestos-related diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. The asbestos lawyers at Harty Jewell also aim to shed light on Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Virginia, its importance, and the efforts made to combat this silent killer.
What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that is primarily found in the lining of the lungs (pleura), although it can also occur in the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum), heart (pericardium), and testicles (tunica vaginalis). Mesothelioma is a signal disease, meaning that it is virtually always caused by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in construction and manufacturing for decades.

Virginia's Asbestos History
Virginia has a long history of industries that used asbestos, including shipbuilding, ship repair, manufacturing, and construction. Workers in shipyards, refineries, power plants, railroads, and factories were often exposed to asbestos without any protection or warning. Navy veterans in particular are also at risk for mesothelioma and asbestos-related disease since ship repairs or shipboard maintenance would often involve removal and application of a variety of asbestos-containing products. The Virginia asbestos lawyers at Harty Jewell, PLLC have handled cases for workers who were exposed to asbestos at the Newport News Shipyard (f/k/a Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company), Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Norshipco, Virginia Electric and Power Company power plants, Amoco Oil Refinery, Dupont, Allied Chemical, and numerous other sites in Virginia.
